Fall Prevention Tips for Seniors Living at Home

Most falls at home are preventable. A few small changes in the house, along with steady habits, can reduce risk dramatically and help seniors feel more confident moving around.

Improve lighting

Add nightlights in hallways, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Keep a lamp within easy reach of the bed. Bright, even lighting makes it easier to spot obstacles and changes in floor level.

Remove tripping hazards

Secure loose rugs with non-slip backing or remove them. Coil cords against walls. Keep floors clear of shoes, books, and pet toys. Even a small item can cause a serious fall.

Add support in the bathroom

Install grab bars near the toilet and inside the shower. Use a non-slip bath mat. A shower chair can make bathing safer and less tiring.

Encourage proper footwear

Slippers without backs or shoes with slick soles increase fall risk. Supportive, non-slip footwear — even indoors — gives feet the grip and stability they need.

Stay active and check vision

Gentle strength and balance exercises can improve stability over time. Regular eye exams also matter, since poor vision makes it harder to judge distances and spot hazards.

When extra help is needed

A caregiver can provide physical support during walks, assist with transfers, and keep the home tidy and safe. For many families, that extra pair of hands brings peace of mind.
